History of Nitrogen
 1790
The name "nitrogen" is coined by French chemist Jean-Antoine-Claude Chaptal in 1790 after experiments show the new gas to be a constituent of nitre, a common name for potassium nitrate (KNO3).

The name nitrogène is a combination of the Greek words νιτρον [nitron] and French géne from Greek γεινομαι (geinomai) = to engender, bring forth.
