Activity Plan of the African Nitrogen Center (500 KB)

Activities

The INI-related activities in Africa have focused on building a solid base from which to fully develop the INI African Center. In that regard, Mateete Bekunda:

• Made two presentations (with Keith Syers, Naresuan University, Thailand) at the African Crop Science Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, 12-17 October 2003 (Syers et al., 2003; Galloway et al., 2003) and convened an open discussion on the "INI in Africa - Needs, Opportunities, and Approaches to Establishing a Regional Center in Africa"
• Hosted the NFRAP (Nitrogen Fertilizer Rapid Assessment Project) workshop in Kampala, Uganda January 12-16, 2004 and during the workshop organized a one day symposium on Nitrogen Issues in Africa, and convened an open discussion “Approaches to Establishing the INI-African Regional Center”
• Initiated the African Preliminary Assessment Activity with support from Dr Mary Scholes, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa (Assessments Coordinator of INI)
• Presented a paper (Bekunda et al., 2004) at the Symposium on Improving Human Welfare and Environmental Conservation by Empowering Farmers to Combat Soil Fertility Degradation (Yaoundé, Cameroon; May 17-21)
